261. Nature Walk
It’s nice to be able to go out for a walk in the midst of nature. Fresh air, exercise and a chance to observe insects, rocks, leaves, plants and trees. A great kid activity.
262. Beading
Beading is great for building fine motors skills, fashion design and concentration.
263. LEGO vehicle
We spotted a kid’s creation of a LEGO vehicle and thought it was done well.
264. DIY Music Boxes
These DIY wooden music box kits are great as gifts for older kids. They need to be put together to work but once done, they are gorgeous.
265. Chinese Craft
We made a Chinese rat craft for the Chinese Year of the Rat. This looks complicated but it wasn’t hard to make at all.
266. Creative Decor
Beading strings and pool noodles can be used to decorate your garden or play space.
267. Yee Sang
My kid and I love making this together. It’s a colorful Chinese dish eaten to usher in Chinese New Year. Traditionally, it’s made with an assortment of vegetables, raw fish and fried noodles. However, we made a fruit, Korean seaweed and smoked fish version which turned out to be even more delicious.
268. Model Waterwheel Coaster Kit
This is a fantastic model waterwheel coaster kit that would be a great engineering project for a parent to do with an older kid.
269. Origami Valentine Card
Instead of buying a store-bought card, how about making your own with your kid? Here is a Valentine’s Day origami card.
270. Open-Ended Play
Futuristic boat design? Encourage open-ended play toys in your home to nurture your kid’s creativity and imagination:
271. Magnetized Gears
Magnetized gears are a great addition for your metal fridge or whiteboard. It exposes your kid to engineering concepts and they can build their own spinning system where one piece influences the motion of the entire system.
272. Manipulative Puzzles
Puzzles are fantastic toys for toddlers and preschoolers to enhance logical thinking, problem-solving, patience (of course!) and to hone their fine motor skills. There are many kinds including alphabet puzzles, shape puzzles and picture puzzles. We like this one because it requires toddlers to manipulate the puzzles in order to get them all to fit on the base.
273. School STEM Fairs
A free way to expose your kid to STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering & Math) and inspire them is to take them to visit your local school’s STEM fairs. It is not only a good learning experience but also a great way to network.
274. Signs of Spring
I made a point to direct my kid’s attention to the beautiful signs of spring. It’s a great way to learn about the different seasons.
275. Fun Kid Card Games
Card games are an effective way to teach kids. This set has 4 games in them; Go Fish, Old Maid, Memory and Matching. They can be used for kids 3+. They teach different sets of skills including memory recall, pattern recognition, taking turns and counting.
276. Plastic Bugs
If you can’t find real bugs for your kids to engage with, fake ones will do as well! (In fact, many parents might prefer this option anyway). Some discussions you can have include their food sources, where they live, how their physical attributes are different from ours and how they contribute to the environment that we live in.
277. Animation
This animation technology makes pictures on paper come to life. Kids were given coloring sheets and when completed, they could place it on a projector to see it come to life.
278. Pic Frame Kit
We had a great time putting this picture frame together. We decided to use it to learn about the days of the week, the season and the months of the year. We used a laminator to laminate the pieces of paper so that we could reuse them.
279. Solar System Activity
I printed out this solar system picture, laminated it and added some reusable space stickers. Then my kid and I took turns making up stories about space.
280. Egg Shells
After observing slugs attacking vegetables in another person’s garden, I researched natural ways to stop slugs. Cooked egg shells can be placed around the vegetables to deter slugs. My kid and I have fun regularly sprinkling these in our vege garden.
